The better insulated your property is, the more energy efficient it is. That will usually mean lower bills because you will need less energy to heat your home.
The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is a government initiative to help reduce fuel poverty across the UK by improving the insulation in homes.
If you are eligible, you could have your insulation upgraded to reduce your carbon footprint and energy bills. The scheme offers subsidies and grants towards the cost of improvements.

solid wall insulation (internal or external)

How much you can apply for and what is available will depend on your circumstances.
Homeowners, landlords and tenants can apply to the scheme. Eligibility is based around
There are some very common questions that come up about GBIS. Two of the most frequent are:

Get help with this fundingThe Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is probably one of the best known of initiatives that are in place to help the UK become more carbon efficient. It is there to help qualifying property owner so switch to more efficient heating.
The BUS scheme is available throughout England and Wales (Scotland has its own similar scheme under ECO 4), and grants funds towards improvements to your boiler. Usually, that will mean replacing your old system with a new, more efficient, one.
By far the most common result of a successful BUS application is the installation of a heat pump, biomass or other low carbon heating system. The grant is usually £5,000 for air-source heat pumps and biomass boilers and £6,000 for ground-source heat pumps. We will talk the options through with you when we know what has been assessed as your best option.
There is quite a list of criteria, so this is really only a condensed version of where BUS applies. The best option is to contact us, and we will chat through the options with you.
To be eligible you must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate. When these are issued they are valid for 10 years so if yours has run out we will need to get a new one issued.
Yes, but we can fill you in more when we talk. If you think you qualify, or you are not sure, call us and we will have a discovery chat to see where you stand. At that point, we can look at the options and fill you in more on what is involved.
Get help with this fundingAround 4.4 million homes in the UK are not on the mains gas grid. That means they rely on other, often less efficient and more expensive alternatives. A Home Upgrade Grant may help make your home more efficient.
The Home Upgrade Grant (HUG) is there to help if you are not connected to the main gas grid. It is designed to improve your home efficiency in various ways depending on your circumstances and eligibility.
The local council will suggest what measures will be best suited to your home. They could include suggested things such as heat pumps, improved or new insulation for your walls, loft and under your floors or perhaps efficient electric radiators.
The rules for HUG are quite straightforward. You will need to own and live in the property and also be off gas grid. That means you cannot have a gas boiler as your main heating system.
The Energy Performance of your home must be D – G.
There is a sort of means-tested element to a HUG. Usually, that means your household income will need to be under £36,000 a year. There are some exceptions to this though. If you are living in an ‘off-grid’ home with no gas heating, call us or drop us a line and we can clarify things for you.

ECO 4 is the latest version of the government's commitment to supporting low-income households by making their homes more energy-efficient. The result is lower carbon emissions and lower cost energy for homes that qualify for the scheme.
It can actually cover quite a range of improvements. Its focus is to help low-income and vulnerable households with grants for a range of insulation and heating improvements. That means it could cover:
The ECO 4 scheme covers a lot of different energy efficiency upgrades. It’s better to talk; to look at your individual circumstances rather than try to cover everything here. Call us or drop us a message and we’ll look at things for you.
The scheme is for qualifying low-income and vulnerable homes, so the first criterion is usually being on government benefits. That includes Universal Credit and other common ones such as Pension Credits, Child Benefit and Housing Benefit. There is a fuller list in the next section.
The household should also have and energy efficiency rating of D – G. Commonly this means the house will be older but that is not always the case.
Yes, lots! This is a wide-ranging scheme and many households are eligible and don’t apply. It is also available to tenants where the household is rated E – G and you have the landlord's permission to apply.
If you are in social housing with a low energy efficiency rating, you may also be able to apply.
Some of the benefits that qualify include:
That’s quite a list and there is a lot to work through if you are going to successfully apply. That said, we are here to make it as easy as possible for eligible applicants. As always, call our team or drop us a message and we can work through things.
